Piano Tuning and Restoration

My purpose is to offer a bespoke service, ensuring that each and every client has the best piano possible for their own individual needs.

With over 200 strings and approximately 5,000 parts, a piano deserves regular care and attention of the highest calibre.

With over forty years of experience, my work covers all aspects of piano servicing. Working differently for each client, I undertake tuning and simple repairs and adjustments in your home through to concert tuning, toning and preparation for performance in large concert venues.

I also undertake renovations, reconditioning and restoration of your cherished heirlooms or Auction/Saleroom "bargains".

I offer a piano sourcing service for clients, matching people with their perfect piano: whether it be your first upright or the grand piano of your dreams.

All my clients have different needs depending on their instruments and ability. Some professional musicians require their pianos to be tuned and regulated more frequently, but usually twice a year would be adequate for the domestic instrument.

I also tune, restore and maintain harpsichords, clavichords, virginals and fortepianos.

Testimonials

Andrew found me my dream piano and then lovingly restored the 1908 Bechstein A to perfect condition. He has since adjusted the action and voicing to my liking and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
— David Lane - NORWICH
Andrew Lofthouse has been tuning my piano and other keyboards for several years. I have always found him to be reliable and skilful. He has undertaken repairs and adjustments to my grand piano, square piano, spinet and clavichord and has shown a depth of knowledge about their action and sound qualities. I would heartily recommend him for tuning, maintenance and repairs.
— Maggie K.
My Muzio Clementi fortepiano has a nice case, and I was assured by its family owner that it was playable, once tuned. I tried the upper register and that seemed to be true. Only when Andy thoroughly examined the instrument and took our the frame and jacks did he discover that I had been virtually conned. A Barbarian, possibly 50 years ago, had used super-glue to fix jacks and felt, massive screws to immobilise wobbly bits [including the pedal], and re-positioned the tuning keys. Andy discovered it had the ‘Irish method’ of construction, which Clementi’s team abandoned after a couple of years, because it was too difficult to keep taking out the complete frame.
After many months of detailed and patient [and no doubt frustrating] research Andy reconstructed what was necessary and regularly tunes the instrument. It is now perfect for domestic use or amateur concerts, and must sound pretty much as Haydn would have heard it.
In brief: BRAVO MEISTRO!

About Me

I was apprenticed at Cookes of Norwich and began 4 years of training to learn all aspects of piano technology and servicing.
I qualified and continued working in the workshop (reconditioning and restoring pianos) and "on the road" as a piano tuner until 1985. I joined Aldens and ran the service department for 8 years. I passed the Piano Tuners’ Association Exams and turned self-employed in 1993 and continue to offer the highest levels of service for professional and amateur clients throughout East Anglia.

MY work

All my clients have different needs depending on their instruments and ability. I aim to offer a bespoke service. From six monthly regular piano tunings in your home to full scale restoration carried out in my own workshop. My years of training and experience enable me to achieve the highest possible results..

I have regular customers who have asked me to find them the piano of their dreams. I have access to a wide range of contacts and am able to source pianos for the individual. Once these have been found, I can use my skills and experience to restore them if necessary and then work on the voicing and action to make them the perfect piano for the client. something to give years of playing pleasure.
